AUSTIN (Nexstar) — The Texas House on Thursday filed its plan for increasing public school funding and establishing a program for subsidizing private education expenses, proposing a modest boost to baseline public school funding and money to help 25,000 students move out of the public school system.House Bill 1 by Killeen Republican Brad Buckley, the House Public Education Committee chair, would give teachers a one-time stipend of $4,000 and increase the base per-student funding by $30 -- from $6,160 to $6,190.Lawmakers kicked off the third special session with little progress negotiating on one of Gov. Greg Abbott's keynote priorities that failed during the regular session: passing an education savings account program (ESA). It would allow Texas parents to receive money to use for private school education. It's been a goal for certain conservatives that gained traction after the COVID-19 pandemic, saying voucher-like programs will give parents more options if they are dissatisfied ...

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 06:07:50 GMT

When everyone was healthy and available during training camp, the Avalanche forward lines remained exactly the same.Four games into the 2023-24 season, and Jonathan Drouin has already spent time on three different lines. The Avs won all four games, but that hasn’t stopped Colorado coach Jared Bednar from already doing some tinkering — and that’s been his plan all along.“I want to have some flexibility with our forward lines as we go throughout the year, depending on who we’re playing and what matchups we might see. So it’s a good time to experiment.”Drouin spent all of camp next to Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen on the top line, and they looked spectacular together on opening night in Los Angeles. But since then, the trio have looked great in spurts and struggled to keep possession of the puck at other times.Bednar said after camp that while stability was the thing to that point, he’s always been planning to move everyone in the top-nin...

He’d been on the sidelines for four months with a calf injury, robbing him of a place in the Springboks squad for a World Cup he was ready to watch on television. On Saturday night, he was booting a 78th-minute penalty from 49 meters through the Paris rain to earn his country a place in the ultimate World Cup final — the Boks vs. the All Blacks in rugby’s biggest rivalry.“It was a big moment,” Pollard said after the 16-15 win over England in the semifinals, “but it is what you want as a player on this stage. To have moments like that as a flyhalf is...
