LONGUEUIL, Que. — The mayor of a Montreal-area city has allegedly been targeted by death threats in connection with a plan to cull most of the white-tailed deer living in a local park. A spokesman for the City of Longueuil confirmed today that Mayor Catherine Fournier has been threatened in recent days and weeks by a single individual.Longueuil police Insp. Gino Iannone says the mayor was placed under intermittent police protection in September due to her high-profile position and to concerning events that occurred even before the recent threats.  Last month, Quebec’s highest court upheld a decision authorizing a controlled crossbow hunt to reduce the deer population at Michel-Chartrand Park to about 20 from more than 100.For years animal rights organizations and activists have tried to block the cull, arguing that the methods chosen to protect the park should favour keeping the animals alive.Fournier’s predecessor, mayor Sylvie Parent, received threats in 2020 over the ...

Indian manufacturer recalls eyedrops previously cited in FDA warning

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 13:12:24 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Indian manufacturer of more than two dozen varieties of eyedrops subject to a U.S. safety warning has officially recalled the products, which were sold by CVS Health, Target, Rite Aid and other national retailers.Kilitch Healthcare India issued the recall on Monday and the Food and Drug Administration published the notice Wednesday. The recall is something of a formality, since the FDA had already alerted U.S. stores last month to stop selling the over-the-counter drops. Consumers should not use the products due to the risk of vision loss or blindness, the FDA said. FDA officials don’t have the legal authority to force manufacturers to recall their products, and instead rely on companies to “voluntarily” do so. The FDA previously stated it recommended the manufacturer recall the eyedrops on Oct. 25. Mumbai-based Kilitch Healthcare said it has not received “any reports of adverse events” related to its products. The lubricating drops were distributed in th...

Slowly increasing sunshine after foggy start

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 13:12:24 GMT

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Widespread low clouds and fog has been stubborn to burn off in the Austin Metro and our eastern counties. Slowly, we'll see increasing sunshine this afternoon, but our cloudy start likely means highs don't get out of the 60s for the Austin Metro today, but 70s will be more widespread in the Hill Country thanks to the additional sun.Highs this afternoonLow clouds and fog build back in overnight into Friday morning followed by increasing afternoon sunshine. Temperatures should be much warmer on Friday ahead of the first of two cold fronts. I expect highs in the upper 70s as a south-southwesterly wind Friday combines with more afternoon sunshine.Friday night's cold front should knock us down in the low 70s this weekend.Highs next few daysWe're watching the potential for a few showers on Sunday and Monday as a storm system to our north barely clips Central Texas. Rain totals from this storm system are looking quite meager, with under 0.25" expected areawide at this time...

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Picture this: A private pool, gym, music "jam" room, computer and print bar with Macs and PCs, a lounge with a jumbo TV and a café right in your own lobby.University of Texas sophomore and mechanical engineering major Amar Saini said he was promised all this when he signed to live at Rise West Campus, his first apartment. But his excitement was put on hold when move-in was delayed multiple times. "It didn’t come as a surprise because you could see the building at any time, and it was clearly nowhere near ready, but it was annoying because the initial email just stated that there would be some compensation, however no statement of when the building was projected to be done," Saini said. Saini said Rise gave residents a couple of options: Option one: The company provides a stipend of $50 a day and covers a hotel. The resident still has to pay the monthly cost of rent. Option two: The company provides $200 a day and rent is waived until move-in.Rise at We...
