COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — For the first time in 25 years, former South Carolina Gov. David Beasley stood before lawmakers in his home state and gave a speech Wednesday. His wasn’t a look back at old times, but a talk about his second career — combatting world hunger. While he shook hands and swapped stories, Beasley has moved on. Instead, he talked about his second career leading the World Food Program. He worked there for six years, appointed by Donald Trump and continuing under President Joe Biden before stepping aside last month.Beasley told legislators — just 11 of the 170 of them were serving when he last addressed them at his 1998 State of the State speech — to hang on to ...

Anthony Edwards is ascending. The Timberwolves must follow suit

Anthony Edwards was serious, but still his smiling, bubbly self after Minnesota’s Game 6 first-round series loss to Memphis last spring that ended the star guard’s first playoff appearance. If anything, that would have been the time to be down. The Timberwolves held double-digit fourth-quarter leads in each of their final three losses of that series, Game 6 included. They let the series slip through their fingertips. But Edwards was too optimistic to get down. He seemed to understand such playoff lumps were part of the process in his first bite at the postseason apple. Moments after the loss, Edwards quickly shifted gears to what he planned to work on in the offseason in preparation for getting back to the same stage and being better. That was not the sentiment after Minnesota’s Game 5 loss to Denver in the same round last week.Edwards’ head was down on the table for the start of his postgame press conference. His face was riddled with disappointment. Minutes earlier, he had missed a ...
